Biography: Dr. Franziska Wespel has been appointed to the newly created HTA Professorship for Breeding Novel Grain Crops at the Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition at the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (HSWT). Her professional and scientific career has been entirely devoted to plant breeding. After completing her PhD in oilseed rape breeding on "Fixed heterosis in oilseed rape (Brassica napus)", she worked in the private sector as a cereal breeder. There she initiated and developed existing breeding programmes and brought innovative, internationally successful varieties for agriculture and industry to market. In her new role, she will continue to focus on developing and adapting new and alternative crops to the changing climatic conditions in Bavaria using innovative breeding methods. As part of the High-Tech Agenda, for example, new crops such as chickpeas and quinoa will be tested for their potential and adapted to the needs of regional agriculture and processing industries.
