Titel: Breeding is the backbone of diversification – success story establishment of spelt, emmer & einkorn
Abstract:
Alternative crops for diversified agriculture are often demanded and the State Plant Breeding Institute of the University of Hohenheim works on that topic since its foundation in 1905. In his talk, Friedrich Longin will present the importance of plant breeding to establish alternative crops. Looking at successful examples spelt and emmer wheat, Friedrich shows the enormous breeding success from first recultivated landraces to modern cultivars within these crops. The latter have 40-50% higher yield, a by far better resistance to field pathogens and are much better adapted to recent farming practices. Thus, breeding is the backbone of successful attempts to establish alternative crops in regional agriculture.
