Title: 35 years of practical wheat breeding – from pedigree to genomic selection

Abstract: Fundamental breeding goal all the years was always the development of resistant (aim reduction of pesticides), high yielding wheat varieties with stable yields and good quality. In the last 35 years wheat breeding was underlying a significant change. New tools and methods like molecular markers, GPS or Genomic selection came along. Achieved success as well as new challenges in wheat breeding will be shown and discussed.

Biography: Dr. Hubert Kempf studied agriculture at the university of Hohenheim and did his Ph.D. thesis about variety mixtures in winter wheat. Longer internships at Saatzucht Hege under the supervision of the breeder Georg Emmert prepared the way into wheat breeding. Since 1991 Dr. Hubert Kempf was working as wheat breeder and head of the station at the location Feldkirchen, near Moosburg an der Isar in Southern Bavaria. From 1991 to 2008 with company Saatzucht Schweiger and from 2008 till today with Secobra Saatzucht.
